Maintaining a healthy weight and getting the right nutrition is as important for all pets. Overweight pets can suffer from a range of health problems including:
- Osteoarthritis
- Joint and mobility problems
- Cardiovascular disease
- Diabetes
- Physical and emotional distress
Sadly this can decrease their quality of life and can ultimately shorten life expectancy by up to two years.
Good nutrition is an essential part of maintaining a healthy weight. Dogs, cats and rabbits have different nutrition requirements depending on their species, breed, size, age and lifestyle.
Concerned about your pet’s weight?
Obesity is the most common form of malnutrition in pets, with 1 in 3 of our pets overweight.
Our Registered Veterinary Nurses run FREE weight clinics, where they offer regular on-going, weight checks, support and advice.
On your first visit to the weight clinic, your pet will be weighed and their body condition assessed. We will also discuss your pets current diet, treats and exercise levels. From this information an initial target will be created, which may change throughout the journey following regular assessments. An initial easy-to-follow feeding and exercise plan will be created for your pet using the information obtained. Don’t worry, treats can still be worked into this plan!
With the plan in place, regular assessments and support provided whenever needed, your pet will then be on the way to a happier and healthier life.
